NPC PC Duo MFA Guide
NPC TAS June 2024
Please go to https://mfa.npc.edu and follow the Duo MFA Enrollment guide (1 - NPC Duo Mobile Device Registration Guide.docx) if you haven’t yet enrolled in Duo for Multifactor Authentication.
Per the Arizona Auditor General’s Office, Northland Pioneer College is required to enforce Multifactor Authentication on all systems with access to Student, Staff, or Financial data, as well as any administrative systems access. TAS is opting to use Cisco Duo to complete this task, as it’s software already known by the College.
Using Duo for Online Computer Login
Before logging into your PC, please verify that the device you used for Duo registration is nearby, the initial Duo prompt will be active for only 45 seconds before you’ll need to retry.
After logging into your computer, you’ll see the following Duo pop-up:
Note: the “remember me for 12 hours” checkbox prevents Duo from forcing you to MFA authenticate for 12 hours, as long as you don’t reboot your computer or change networks (going from Wi-Fi to wired, or campus to campus will cause re-authentication)
Duo will automatically send your device a push notification or ask you for an authentication code, depending on how you registered. Follow the instructions on screen to authenticate.
Registering Duo for Offline Computer Login
NOTE: Having the Duo app installed on a tablet or smartphone is required for Offline login. Duo is not able to complete a text message or phone call authentication if your computer is not connected to the internet.
After the first Duo authentication to a computer, the following screen will pop up asking for offline enrollment.
This step is recommended by TAS. Without completing these steps, you will not be able to log into your computer without an internet connection.
A QR code will appear on the screen After clicking Activate Now
Open the Duo app on your mobile device and tap the Add button in the upper-right
Then select QR Code
If a message pops up stating that Duo needs access to your device’s camera, please accept
Scan the QR code with your device
When Duo asks you to name the entry, we recommend using something identifiable, such as: “Office HP Laptop 6/1/24” or even the machine name, if you know it
Return to your computer and enter the 6-digit passcode generated for your new entry
That’s it! You’re enrolled for Duo even when your computer is offline
Using Duo for Offline Computer Login
When logging into your computer while not connected to the Internet, Duo will not send a push notification.
You will need to manually open your Duo app and enter the 6-digit code it gives you into the Duo window on your laptop.
Log into your computer as usual
The following screen will pop up and ask for a Duo offline code
Open the Duo app on your device and tap on the entry for your computer
Copy the 6-digit code from your device into the Duo window on your computer and click “Log in”
Note: Duo passcodes reset every 30 seconds; so, you will need to copy the code from your device to your computer and click Log in within that 30-second window.
