NPC Duo Mobile Device Registration Guide
NPC TAS June 2024
Cisco Duo is a Multifactor Authentication (MFA) program developed by Cisco and is a requirement for logging into NPC’s VPN software as of June 30, 2023.
Before you start following this guide, please make sure you have your NPC email open on your computer and your mobile device nearby.
Initial Duo Email
When new users are given permission to log into NPC’s VPN, they are automatically added to Duo, and should receive the email seen below.
https://guide.duo.com/enrollment: Brings you to Duo’s documentation for enrolling a device
https://mfa.npc.edu: Brings you to a share of documentation collected by TAS, including videos and more thorough
The final link brings you to Duo’s enrollment webpage, which this document will walk you through.
Duo Enrollment (Smartphone/Tablet App)
Follow these steps if you want to install the Duo app on your phone and use the Push notification method.
After clicking the Duo enrollment link, you will be brought to the following page, click Start Setup to get started.
Page 2 will ask you to select which type of device you are enrolling. In this guide we’ll be enrolling an Android device.
Page 3 will ask you to enter the phone number of the device you’re enrolling in Duo.
Enter the phone number, check the box after you’ve verified that it’s correct, and click Continue
Page 4 will ask which type of phone you have. Because our example is an Android, we’ll select that option, and then Continue
Page 5 Instructs us to go to the Google Play Store and install Duo mobile before continuing to the next step.
Note: If you’re using an iPhone, this step will direct you to the Apple App Store.
Below are screenshots of the Duo Apps on both the Android app store as well as the Apple app store
After downloading the Duo app to your phone, click I have Duo Mobile installed.
If Duo Mobile prompts you to allow notifications, please opt to Allow Notifications.
On your phone, open the Duo app and select Set up account
Then select Use a QR code, and scan the QR code Duo shows on page 6
Duo Mobile will ask you to name the account in the app. The name has no function other than helping you distinguish which entry matches with which login. I’d recommend something like “NPC – (Today’s Date)”
Back on your desktop, click Continue once the button turns green.
On Page 6, there are 3 choices to make:
- “Ask to choose an authentication method”: Forces you to choose how Duo authenticates you every time you log in
- “Automatically send this device a Duo Push”: Automatically sends your phone a push notification every time you log in
- This option is recommended by both Duo and TAS
- “Automatically call this device”: Automatically calls your phone every time you log in
After you make your selection, click Finish Enrollment, and you’re done!
How does the Duo app work?
When you authenticate with an app or service that’s protected by Duo, your mobile device will get a push notification asking if you’re trying to log in.
If you were trying to log in, tap Approve, and you’re in!
If it wasn’t you trying to log in, tap Deny to not allow the login attempt, and the Duo admins will be notified of the event.
Duo Enrollment (Without App)
Follow these steps if you don’t want to install the Duo app on your phone and wish to receive texts or calls. If you’ve completed the above steps for the App installiation, you do not need to follow these.
After clicking the Duo enrollment link, you will be brought to the following page, click Start Setup to get started.
Page 2 will ask you to select which type of device you are enrolling. In this guide we’ll be using a cell phone without using the app and will rely on calls and texts.
Page 3 will ask you to enter the phone number of the device you’re enrolling in Duo.
Enter the phone number, check the box after you’ve verified that it’s correct, and click Continue
Page 4 will ask which type of phone you have. Because you have chosen to not install the app, select Other and then Continue
Page 5 gives us only two authentication options, and they are:
- “Ask to choose an authentication method”: Forces you choose how Duo authenticates you every time you log in
- “Automatically call this device”: Automatically calls your phone every time you log in
Make your selection and then click Finish Enrollment
